An alternative to in-lab diagnosis

Home sleep tests are growing in popularity, and sleep experts aren’t surprised. Sleep clinics use various monitors and other medical equipment, including sensors attached to all different parts of the body to measure heart rate and brain activity. Testing at home is different.

“Tests performed at home are done in your own bed, and generally require only a few monitors and straps,” says Lauri Leadley, a sleep expert and president of Valley Sleep Center in Arizona. The home test “gear” often consists of a sensor that slips over the index finger to measure oxygen levels and another

Measuring the benefits of a sleep study

Harry Hawk, 51, of New York City, had his first sleep study in 2008. “I stopped breathing 180 times in six hours,” he said of the study’s findings. He was diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea and put on a CPAP machine, which has helped reduce his symptoms.

But after Hawk recently lost weight, his doctor ordered a new sleep study to reevaluate his condition. “Before the first test, I can imagine I probably had little to no REM sleep for as many as five years,” Hawk said.

After months or even years of not sleeping well and being tired and irritable in the morning, you've been diagnosed with sleep apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder in which a person repeatedly stops and starts breathing during sleep. So now what?

More than 22 million Americans have sleep apnea. "Less than 10 percent are diagnosed and being treated," said Dr. Johnathan Greenburg, a snoring and sleep apnea expert. "Snoring and being overweight are two very strong indicators of the possibility of having obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).”

The most accurate way to diagnose sleep apnea is through a polysomnogram, or sleep study, either in a lab or at home, according to WebMD.
